MALAS

The beauty and blessing behind the mala.…

Mala’s were one of the first things I started making, simply because I was drawn to them. I made a few Rosaries first and while they were and are beautiful, meaningful and serve a purpose for those needing them, I loved the ‘softness’ of a Mala. They are hand knotted on silk instead of connected with wire and they just felt better in my hands.

I didn’t fully understand my connection to them at first, I just knew I wanted to make them. And hundreds of Malas later I am still not sure why I love them, I just gratefully accept the gift of them in my life.

And the real gift I discovered over time was in the quiet process of creating them. I sit with a wooden tray and hand knot 108 beads, one after the other on thick silk. It is the act of adding each bead and securing it in place with a handmade knot that I truly receive it’s blessing. And if I’m lucky enough to know it’s intended new owner I can also offer up good thoughts, prayers and well wishes along the way.

You might think that after creating so many that I also have several but I do not. I have one. A simple smaller bead style that I wear often. It is African Turquoise and it was one of my very first I ever made.

If you are unfamiliar with a mala, it is set of prayer beads traditionally used in a meditation like practice. The 108 beads are used for counting breaths or mentally repeating a mantra, most commonly used in Tibetian Buddhism. I am not a Buddhist and do not use my mala is the traditional sense. I do however hold mine in gratitude and purposeful prayer and connection to a power greater than myself. I have found that I simply enjoy wearing them, whether I use them in a focused spiritual nature or not. I feel blessed just having them on or near me.

Over time, I have created fancier ones with handmade pendants adorning the front of my beautiful tassels, which are also hand crafted. I choose a complimenting cabochon and set it in fine and sterling silver, usually with hand stamped details and it becomes a focal point on a wearable mala necklace.

Customized….Speak Love.

I offer custom and ready made styles, with or without a pendant but always with the most soft and luxurious deerskin leather tassels.
